CONSULTATION:
Call if you have questions about the law,
available educational and related services or other issues.
Sometimes parents only need a quick question answered;
sometimes parents need help and encouragement over the
course of months. This service is provided at no
cost to parents of Special-Needs children in the State of Hawaii.
For all others, evaluations are conducted on a fee for services basis. There may be limits to the amount of free consultation
available to a parent.
DUE PROCESS REPRESENTATION:
This service is the key to successful advocacy for your child. The fee for this service is established by ability to pay (sliding scale) for parents of Special-Needs children in the State of Hawaii. Travel expenses and expert witnesses may be needed in some cases. Before your case is started, these potential expenses will be discussed. These costs are usually not a factor.
FEDERAL COURT CASES:
Finding an attorney with experience in handling these matters is an important consideration. If your case requires representation in federal court, having an attorney that represented you at the Due Process hearing will be helpful. It is also important for the Department of Education to understand that you will have experienced legal representation if your case is appealed. This may factor into the school's willingness to settle the Due Process hearing and provide your child with appropriate services.
